Dear Wood Toy Enthusiast,

To truly appreciate our beautiful creations, my wife Bobbie and I would like to describe the various steps and procedures that go into each and every one of our toys:
We start with the hand selection of all the wood we use. There are several requirements the wood must meet, depending on the toy we will create with it. First:

  • The wood must be durable, so the toy we create with it  can handle the future it's about to endure.... A Toddlers Life!
  • We then consider the woods softness and sand ability. Our toys are not only fun to play with, they feel good too.
  • Finally the wood must also look good. The grain and pattern can be a beautiful thing.

After the wood has been selected, we separate the boards according to what we will create with each piece. This part is especially fun for me because of the physical activity involved. There are days I have sorted, cut, ripped then stacked over 2,000 feet of wood! All the while being reminded by Bobbie how sore I will be the next day. She's always right, but it's a good sore.
Then we lay the wood out and transfer the designs using patterns of the toys I have designed over the past 18 years. Yes, 18 years!!! ( I wonder how many thousands of airplanes I have made in that time? ). Next we rip, cut, scroll, drill and router all the pieces we will need and prepare them for sanding. This is the most important step! A smooth toy will bring years of enjoyment.
When the sanding is completed, we assemble the pieces using glue and dowels only! No nails or screws are ever used. The assembled pieces are placed into clamps and allowed to set up overnight, this gives each part the necessary bonding time.

The next day we stain the various parts selecting from a rainbow of colors, We use a  water based, non-toxic stain (all our toys are completely edible!). After drying we attach the wheels, axels, propellers, etc.., then comes the final inspection! Of course the toy wouldn't even have made it to this stage if something were amiss, but I guess we need closure because our toys feel like they are part of us and now they will be leaving for a new home to make some child very happy.
We make a rather large variety of toys considering it's  mostly Bobbie and myself making them. Sometimes family members help out, but before long they are complaining of being overworked and underpaid! Go figure?
We make Trains, Planes, Trucks and Custom Orders on request. We also make personalized clothes racks and matching bookends in a wide variety of designs that the customer selects according to the theme of their child's room. This is Bobbie's forte! She can trace and cut out a child's name faster than you can eat a Big Mac (or a Whopper, whatever you prefer)!

Our toys are educational as well as fun! They are filled with animals, blocks, ABC blocks, barrels, logs, people and more. All in a variety of designs, sizes and colors! It has become quite rewarding for us to watch a child use our creations to expand and explore their imaginations!
Needless to say we are having a blast being The Woodsman and hope to do so for many years to come. Check out our show dates and next time you see us be sure to stop by and play awhile. We'd love to meet you!

     See You soon,
     Doug and Bobbie Gold
